Government Energy Support

At Smart Energy Hub, we ensure that you stay informed about the latest government assistance available.

The UK Government offers a variety of financial support schemes to help households reduce energy bills and make energy-efficient improvements. At Smart Energy Hub, we ensure that you stay informed about the latest government assistance available. Whether you need help paying your bills or making energy-saving upgrades to your home, there are several programmes designed to provide financial relief.

Cost of Living Payments from Spring 2024

Starting in Spring 2024, the government will provide additional Cost of Living Payments to support low-income households struggling with rising living expenses, including energy costs. If you’re receiving benefits such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, or other qualifying support, you may be eligible for these payments. The Cost of Living Payments are designed to provide financial relief for essentials such as energy bills, food, and other living costs.

Energy Price Guarantee

The Energy Price Guarantee was introduced to shield households from escalating energy prices by limiting the price suppliers can charge per unit of energy. This initiative has been extended to 2024, ensuring that households continue to receive protection against further increases. The guarantee complements other government support schemes to ease the financial burden on families across the UK.

How the New Energy Price Guarantee Will Be Applied to Energy Bills in Great Britain

The Energy Price Guarantee caps the price per unit of electricity and gas to protect consumers from sudden spikes in energy prices. While this does not limit the total bill (which depends on usage), it ensures that households pay a fair rate per unit of energy. The guarantee will continue to apply across Great Britain through 2024, offering relief from the volatility of the global energy market.

Household Support Fund

The Household Support Fund provides financial assistance to households struggling with the rising cost of living, including energy bills. This fund is distributed through local councils and is aimed at supporting vulnerable households. If you're having difficulty paying your bills, your local authority may be able to provide financial help through this scheme. It’s designed to ensure that no household falls into fuel poverty during challenging times.

VAT Relief for Energy-Saving Materials

The UK Government offers VAT relief on energy-saving materials to encourage homeowners to make energy-efficient improvements. If you're installing materials such as insulation, solar panels, or heat pumps, you may qualify for reduced VAT rates, lowering the overall cost of your home upgrades. This scheme is designed to make energy-saving improvements more affordable and accessible.

Heat the Human

The Heat the Human initiative focuses on helping vulnerable individuals keep warm during the colder months. This scheme promotes the use of energy-efficient heating methods, ensuring that those most in need can stay warm without incurring excessive energy costs. The programme provides advice on low-cost heating methods and may offer support in obtaining energy-efficient equipment to reduce overall consumption.

Financial Support if You Use an Oxygen Concentrator

If you use an oxygen concentrator at home, you may be eligible for financial assistance to cover the extra energy costs associated with its use. The NHS covers the electricity used to power concentrators through payments to your energy supplier. This ensures that essential medical equipment doesn’t lead to additional financial strain. If you haven't yet applied for this assistance, contact your healthcare provider to learn more about the support available.

Cold Weather Payment

Households in certain areas may qualify for the Cold Weather Payment, which is triggered when temperatures drop to zero degrees Celsius or below for seven consecutive days. If eligible, you’ll receive £25 for each cold spell during the winter months, helping you manage heating costs during the harshest weather conditions.
This payment is active from 1 November 2023 to 31 March 2024.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is designed to help homeowners switch from traditional heating systems to more energy-efficient alternatives like heat pumps. You could receive up to £5,000 towards the cost of installing a heat pump or biomass boiler in your home. This scheme aims to reduce your carbon footprint while lowering long-term heating costs. The scheme offers grants of up to £5,000 and is available until March 2025.

ECO4 Scheme

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme helps low-income households make energy efficiency improvements, such as installing insulation, upgrading heating systems, or improving glazing. If you qualify, your energy supplier may be able to help you access funding for these upgrades at no cost to you. The goal of ECO4 is to lower energy consumption and reduce bills in the long term. This programme is expected to run until March 2026, providing crucial support for vulnerable households.

Home Upgrade Grant (HUG)

The Home Upgrade Grant is available to households that are not connected to the gas grid. This grant helps pay for home improvements such as insulation, double glazing, and energy-efficient heating systems. You could be eligible for up to £25,000 to improve your home’s energy efficiency if you meet the criteria. This scheme is available until March 2025.
